Examination Structure

1.0     CONDUCT OF THE PART I EXAMINATION - EFFECTIVE SECOND SEMESTER 2013

Three written papers (no oral examination) as follows:



1.1     Part IA



Basic Sciences:  essay and short questions (3 hours)



 



1.2     Part IB



Paper I:       Applied Basic Sciences:  essay questions (3 hours)



Paper 2:      Applied Basic Sciences:  short questions (2 hours)



 



2.0     CONDUCT OF THE PART II EXAMINATION



 



2.1     Written examination:



                  Two written papers, of 3 hours duration each, on:



·    Gynaecology and such aspects of medicine, surgery and basic medical sciences as are relevant to the practice of Gynaecology



·    Obstetrics and such aspects of medicine, surgery, neonatal paediatrics and basic medical sciences as are relevant to the practice of Obstetrics



 



2.2     Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE):



This will include questions on ultrasound, cardiotocography, colposcopy, radiology, cytology and any other topics relevant to the clinical practice of Obstetrics and Gynaecology



 



2.3     Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE):



Three or four gynaecological clinical scenarios and three or four obstetrical clinical scenarios will be given to the candidate. The candidate will be required to discuss the management with the examiner after a period of preparation

Medals

The G P CHARLEWOOD MEDAL was endowed in 1980 by Dr Godfrey Phillips Charlewood, Founder of the CMSA, and is awarded to candidates who obtain excellent results in Part I of the Fellowship examination of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa.

The DAUBENTON MEDAL was endowed in 1969 by the late Professor François Daubenton, the sixth President of The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, and is awarded to candidates who obtain outstanding results in the Fellowship examination of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa.

Release of examination results

Please note that the results for the FCOG(SA) Part I examination are not released with the provisional examination results but only once the results have been ratified by Senate, after the orals.

Requirements

Part I:
- No requirements.
Part II:
- 36 months in a numbered registrar training post.
- Commentary handed in six months prior to written examination. This should include the Reflective Case, as per the FCOG(SA) Guidelines. This will only affect candidates entering into their training from 1 January 2011.
- Logbook handed in with application.
