Examination Structure

Primary: 2 MCQ papers, no oral examination.

Intermediate: 2 MCQ papers and 2 orals.

Final: 2 written papers; Clinical and/or oral and/or OSCE and/or practical.

Requirements

Primary: - Successful completion of the Basic Surgical Skills course prior to applying for the examination.

Intermediate: - 12 months surgical training in approved posts. Training during community service cannot be submitted. Must include 6 months general surgery and 3 months ICU. ATLS required at the time of applying for the FCS(SA) Intermediate examination.

Final: - 36 months in a numbered registrar training post. Hard copy and electronic format of the Portfolio must be submitted together with a consolidation sheet. Proof of submission of research component (Effective from 15 June 2012 applications).
