The CMSA was incorporated under the Companies Act, 1926 (Act No 46 of 1926) as an Association not for gain (Current Registration Number 1955/000003/08).
In terms of the Certificate of Incorporation No 21/55/3 dated 21 July 1955, the CMSA was originally incorporated under the name
The College of Physicians and Surgeons
of South Africa
On 10 April 1958, this was altered to
The College of Physicians, Surgeons
and Gynaecologists of South Africa
On 19 January 1972 this was changed to the all inclusive name of
The College of Medicine
of South Africa
In terms of a Special Resolution registered by the Registrar of Companies on 10 December 1999, the College name was finally altered to:

Note:
The Articles of Association with the schedule of By-laws originally registered on the formation of the CMSA have been amended from time to time and are now as set out in this printed document which was finally revised in the year 2007.
